Expert Tips from a Neck Pain Doctor in Huntsville, Texas

14% of the American adult population have suffered from neck pain at some point in their lifetime. Whether it’s from poor posture, stress, or an injury, neck pain can significantly affect your quality of life. We’ve gathered a few tips from our neck pain and migraine chiropractor Dr. Pruski so you can better understand what is happening to your neck along with helpful ways to alleviate the pain.

1- Go for an Ergonomic Work Station

If you spend many hours at the office, work from home, or just spend many hours looking down at a laptop screen your work setup has a big impact on your neck pain:

  •  A neck-supporting chair (with a head-rest) will help you maintain your spine in a neutral position
  • Make the necessary changes to your chair so that your feet can plant firmly on the floor with your thighs parallel to the ground
  • Choose a desk based on its height: it has to allow your forearms to be parallel with the floor when you type
  • Position your monitor or laptop so that your gaze is on the top third of the screen, rather than hunching or looking down

2- Your Pillow Matters

Even though a pillow probably won’t be the magical answer to your neck pain, there are a few things you can do to check that it isn’t the root cause of your discomfort:

  • Replace your pillows every year or two
  • Pick a memory foam pillow that will adapt to your spine’s structure
  • Look for a comfortable travel pillow so you don’t have to worry about neck pain while you are away from your home
  • Choose flatter pillows that allow you to keep your head in close alignment with your spine

3- Be Aware of Your Sleeping Position

Generally speaking, sleeping on your back is the preferred sleeping position as it takes the most weight off your neck. But:

  • For chronic neck pain, sleeping on your back with a wedge pillow may help. You may also place a pillow under both arms to take even more pressure off your neck.
  • Sleeping on your stomach is the sleeping position that is most likely to cause neck pain: when you lie on your stomach, you usually turn your head and neck to the side, and your back arches.
  • If you sleep on your side, keep your spine straight by using a pillow that is higher under your neck than your head.
